From the 1st November 2017, Scalabrini is hosting a free six week program called ‘Caring for the Carer’ that aims to provide information, guidance and support for those of you who are caring for a loved one living with dementia.
According to Alzheimer’s Australia there is an estimated 138,700 people currently living with dementia in NSW and in 2016 dementia became the leading cause of death among Australian women.
The vast majority of people living with dementia in the community rely on a carer to support them and there are currently more than 200,000 Australians providing this unpaid informal care.
Scalabrini Village Drummoyne is a not-for-profit residential aged care provider, with a particular focus dementia excellence and is working toward dementia care that is genuinely person-centred.
Scalabrini acknowledges that often carers are not yet ready to forgo their responsibilities as carers and therefore need further support and help. To help support carers who are currently in their role within a home setting the program will cover:
- What is dementia, disease progression and changes in behaviour
- Practical strategies, how to establish meaningful relationships and engagement, communication strategies
- Self-care, relaxation and managing emotions
- How the aged care system works, community services, legal issues and financials
Attendees will have an opportunity to obtain the latest information, meet others in a similar situation and ask questions, explore ways of managing now and into the future and discuss their situation and express feelings in a safe and empathetic environment.
