Fit Kidz Early Learning Centre, Putney: Newly Renovated, Now Welcoming Little Ones From 6 Weeks

Fit Kidz Early Learning Centre in Putney has just completed a major renovation, transforming the much-loved centre into a beautifully refurbished, thoughtfully designed space for local families. During our visit, owner Melissa Scaife and Ashley Jones, Head of Family & Community Connections, walked us through the refreshed centre and shared their genuine passion for creating a place where children feel safe, known and well supported.

One of the biggest changes is that Fit Kidz Putney is now welcoming children from 6 weeks to 6 years, giving families the opportunity to begin their early learning journey from infancy all the way through to school readiness in one warm, familiar environment.

A Beautifully Renovated, Mindfully Designed Centre

Following a full centre-wide renovation, this 50-place service has been transformed into a beautiful, modern and thoughtfully designed space that supports children’s growth at every stage.

Highlights include:

  • Two intentionally designed playrooms with calm, mindful layouts
  • Spaces designed by parents for families, with a strong focus on comfort, safety and children’s developmental needs
  • A brand-new outdoor play space for under-twos, securely fenced while still feeling open and connected to nature
  • A beautifully considered baby space that is more than just a room — it’s a nurturing haven built on love, trust, connection and a strong sense of security
  • Natural play materials throughout, creating a warm, calm and truly homelike atmosphere
  • Outdoor areas that encourage gardening, exploration and nature-based play
  • Much-loved centre pets including fish, chickens and Honu the turtle

Melissa and Ashley explained how every decision was made with purpose, ensuring children have the space and environment they need to thrive and reach their milestones.

A Centre at the Heart of the Community

Families appreciate the strong community feel at Fit Kidz Putney. With many parents living or working close by, the centre has naturally become a place where people get to know each other and build supportive relationships.

Fit Kidz maintains active links with local organisations, including a long-standing partnership with Royal Rehab. Over the years, children have created small gifts, performances and activities for patients as a way of engaging with the local community in a practical, age-appropriate way.

The centre also participates in local excursions and neighbourhood events, giving children regular opportunities to explore the area and understand the community they are part of. It’s an authentic, down-to-earth approach to connection that families genuinely value.

Daily Life at Fit Kidz

Fit Kidz Putney prides itself on meaningful, high-quality interactions with children. Educators take a thoughtful and consistent approach to daily routines and play, creating an environment where children feel supported as they build confidence and develop new skills.

The centre’s long-time animal residents are also part of this everyday learning. The chickens and their much-loved turtle, Honu — who has been with the centre for more than eight years — give children simple, hands-on opportunities to learn about caring for animals and understanding the natural world.

Fresh Meals Cooked Onsite, With Garden-to-Plate Learning

All meals are prepared fresh onsite by the centre’s chef, and children enjoy breakfast, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea and a late snack. Meals are eaten together in a dedicated dining room, helping children build social skills, independence and confidence.

Fit Kidz grows herbs and veggies in its garden and uses eggs from their chickens. Children are regularly invited to participate in cooking experiences led by the chef, turning food experiences into moments of curiosity, exploration and learning.

“Becoming Me”: A School Readiness Program That Builds Confident Learners

The centre offers a strong School Readiness Program designed to support children before they start school. Their “Becoming Me” workbooks help build confidence, emotional awareness, routine, independence and early literacy and numeracy skills through play and exploration.

Primary school–trained educator Amanda, who joined us on the tour, brought deep knowledge of foundational learning and explained the importance of practising pencil grip, self-regulation strategies, cutting, number recognition, patterning, letters, handwashing, self-care, breathing techniques, following instructions and more.

The program aims to help every child develop a love of learning and feel excited and ready for “big school.”
